Which converter are you using?  There's a list at
http://www.stepmania.com/wiki/USB_Adapters

The reason I ask about lights is that lighted pads generally draw too
much power.

How does it show up on your computer, and how are you testing that "none
of the buttons produce a response"?  If you're on Linux and it registers
as a gamepad/joystick, you can just cat the device and that'll let you
know whether you're at least getting something.

Is this on a laptop or desktop?
