i bet the resolution is decent, and i bet it can be improved by
using a thinner tube.  the normal car-counting kind are about the
width of a standard air hose, but i don't see why you couldn't
adapt something thinner, like surgical tubing maybe.  since it
doesn't have to withstand the weight of cars, you know.

also: it might be a good idea to run two or more tubes, at varying
diagonals, and take the max count per minute from each.  this would
combat errors due to bikes riding parallel.  (does that make sense?
i could draw a picture ...)
