Thanks for the feedback Don - I'll plug away at firmata for a bit,
given that affirmation.

Yeah, I realize this approach lobotomizes the arduino - I'm taking
baby steps out of the box (it's cold out there). Hadn't considered the
MIDI approach - there seems to be a fair bit of resources in that
direction. I'll take a look.
