I figured that Philadelphia should have a Dorkbot chapter so I set up the page and agreed to moderate the listserve, but I'm too busy with other art and engineering projects to take charge of organizing meetings/activities. If you'd like to take the initiative and jumpstart some actives or online discussions please go right ahead! Also, if you know of other people who may be interested in joining the group please spread the word. - Chris www.noisemantra.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Jesse MacGregor To: dorkbotphiladelphia-blabber@dorkbot.org Sent: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 11:45 AM Subject: [dorkbotphiladelphia-blabber] Very excited about dorkbot I'm an embedded software engineer and a tinkerer/hobbyist in Jersey about 7 miles from center city. I guess I'll start I go by Chris, last name Mendoza, and my work hast mostly to do with realtime live video manipulation... some people call that "webcam art", some don't. I currently live in Philly, via WashDC, via Caracas, Venezuela. I try to code my own stuff, and even though I am not an accomplished programmer by any stretch of the imagination, I've been able to hack nice little toys out of Java (and Processing), C++ and OpenGL. There is also some ActionScript that I've been able to put together, but nothing that I would show... I am very open to collaborations, in fact, it is something I would really like to do, especially in the performance arena. You can see some of my (older) stuff at my site, which hasn't been updated in a bit www.matadata.com You can also catch another viddie of my work at http://setpixel.com/content/?ID=ghostlymirror Setpixel, btw, is a great site... make sure to check out all the demos and toys they have there! So what do the rest of you do? c. From jmartin at pil.net Tue May 31 23:13:51 2005 From: jmartin at pil.net (John Martin) Date: Tue May 31 22:14:26 2005 Subject: [dorkbotphiladelphia-blabber] activity Message-ID: <2DE38485-D24B-11D9-A4C0-000393BB0CC2@pil.net> Good to see some activity! I am a vacuum tube guy. I have built vacuum tube audio devices in non traditional enclosures such as space heaters, old test gear and custom woodwork of various kinds. I've also done a little RF stuff in the past. Been experimenting with electronics in one form or another since I was nine years old. Since I lost my "high tech" job due to the closing of a division of the company I worked for I have been able to make a meager living fixing guitar amps and vintage audio gear in between my own projects. The corporate world had become boring anyway. The artistic possibilities of combining new and old technologies in unusual ways is an inspiration in itself. Hope I will be able to contribute at some point. John M
