WHAT: August 2008 Dorkbot: Catastrophic Cacophony Workshop!
WHEN: Weds, Aug 6th, 7:30 - 10:30pm
WHERE: 911 Media, 402 9th Ave N.
http://www.911media.org/
ADMISSION: Around $5 to purchase workshop materials. Free for
presentation/observers.
Also bring a couple of bucks to support 911
Media! We'll
have a donation jar out by the beer. ;)
Josh Kopel, former co-organizer of MakePhilly (http://makephilly.com/),
brings the maker challenge to Seattle.
The theme is catastrophic cacophony and the challenge is to build the
loudest, craziest, flashiest automated "musical" instrument ever. You will
have to be able to step back and let your creation play by itself, even if
it destroys itself in the process.
The most amazing instrument wins.
Extra points if it sounds musical.
For this workshop, we'll break up into teams of 6-8 people, and each team
will be given a "kit" made up of basic tools and materials. We'll be
supplying basic motors, battery packs, and switches. Bring your own "robot
vomit" to make the building more interesting. (i.e. metal and plastic
wheels, gears and other parts, working electronics components, colorful
shiny glowy things, and anything else you think might enhance your
creation.) You never know what may get destroyed, so leave the expensive
stuff at home.
Also bring any tools that you have to help put the thing together.
RSVP by sending "shelly, I'll be there with my 5$ for supplies" at
shellyhivemind at gmail.com. If you really want to take it to the next level,
get a team together!
Schedule:
7:30, brief presentation by Joshua Kopel, illustrating similar past
workshops with MakePhilly, and giving instructions
8:00-10:30, workshop, performance, tear-down, clean up.
**************************
As ever, special thanks to 911 Media Arts Center for providing such a great
venue and friendly support for our monthly Dorkbot meetings.
See you on Wednesday, Aug 6th!
