What if you didn't use a liquid at all, but rather
used itty bitty white beads or pellets of some kind. 
The larger or heavier they are, the more coherent the
stream of them would be, making them look quite like a
liquid.  Circulating them might be an interesting
trick (or not...haven't thought about it that much),
but then they'd never dry up, etc., and the thing
could run forever.
