Artist Talk: Composer Spotlight - Wednesday, November 8, 7:30pm
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 9, 7pm
The Jack Straw New Media Gallery opens Lonely Microphone, a new installation
by Bay Area artist Joe Colley, on Thursday, November 9, with a reception at
7pm. The artist will give a talk on the day before the opening, Wednesday,
November 8, at 7:30pm, as part of our monthly Composer Spotlight series.
Colley recently received the 2006 Award of Distinction in Digital Music from
the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, for his CD Psychic Stress
Soundtracks (Antifrost). Along with Colley, Bay Area electronic artists
David Kwan and Jim Haynes are set to open installations at the New Media
Gallery in February 2007 and August 2007, respectively. Seattle-based artist
Paul Rucker opens his installation in May 2007.
Joe Colley's Lonely Microphone is a room installation centered around the
pathetic sight and sound of a suspended rotating microphone as it traces an
endless circle on the floor. Vibration from audience footsteps trigger
momentary flickers of light that illuminate the scene and in turn change
tones in the room.
"Using the microphone to trace an endless circle is a way to focus attention
and to listen," says Colley," a metaphor for these cycles of life we take
for granted. By focusing attention on this circle in this room - hopefully
it will act as a kind of mantra. Microphone as solitary individual."
Joe Colley is a self taught artist investigating the conceptual
possibilities of sound through music production, installations, or
collaborations with video artists, dancers, and even prisoners. His earlier
works were also created under the moniker Crawl Unit. His latest
installations attempt to dissimulate the artist by concentrating on the
instigation of unstable situations unique to the composition of random
sound.
His performances have been seen as part of festivals including Activating
The Medium (SFMOMA), Observatori (Valencia, Spain), Phonotaktik (Vienna,
Austria), Beyond Music (Venice, Ca.), Songlines (Mills College, Oakland),
CEAIT (CalArts, Valencia), and the 2006 San Francisco Electronic Music
Festival. His recordings have been released internationally on various
underground record labels such as Groundfault Records, Auscultare, and
23five. He currently resides in Oakland, CA.

interdisciplinary peer panel (Artist Support and New Media Gallery programs)
