[dorkbotsea-blabber] Matt Stiger's new beast.

Yeah, it's an async rotary with DC motor and speed
control. Seems to take the juice just fine with only
a little supplemental air flow.

On my own coils (all 2kW or less), I've managed to get
away with static air-blast gaps. The possibility of
something going wrong with a large-diameter rotary gap
has always scared me more than high voltage, for some
reason.

Nice coil you have (had?) there, BTW. My largest coil
(under construction) is wound on 6"-OD PVC. I want to
do some experiments with higher-than-usual coupling,
so the secondary will be fully immersed in transformer
oil within a large insulator, seen on the left here:
http://silicon-arcana.com/cap/cap.jpg The insulator
is currently home to a 115kV capacitor, which I
haven't decided what to do with. The idea is to
create an indestructible secondary capable of
withstanding all manner of creative abuse :-) I'm
presently saving up to buy a nice spun toroid, which
promises to cost as much as all the rest of the parts
combined :-(((
