We have a few great presentations lined up for January's Dorkbot meeting!

Come learn about how others have used electronics in their art, and be
inspired: Josh Kopel will be talking about the year of the Arduino, Michael
Worobec about accelerometers in interactive art, and Hugo Solis Garcia about
software he's developed to create sound art. More info below.

More about the presentations....

Josh Kopel: "Out of Control" a quick review of the micro-controller and DIY
electronics explosion that was 2008.

2008 might well be called the year of Arduino, as the little
micro-controller from Italy invaded the DIY scene and showed up just about
everywhere. Beyond just the Arduino, 2008 also saw a vast increase of
interest in micro-controllers and unique interfaces for use in the arts.
Join us for a rapid no-doubt incomplete, but hopefully entertaining review
of the trends and topics that made 2008 so exciting.

Josh Kopel has been hacking electronics since he first discovered BYTE
magazine in the early 1980's. He is a recent arrival in Seattle from
Philadelphia where he helped found a hacker space (http://thehacktory.org),
and co-organized MakePhilly. An expert and dedicated accumulator, he has
turned to building Arduino projects in a vain attempt to use up the vast
quantities of junk he has collected.
Michael Worobec: Alternative Inputs: Thoughts on how to use and abuse
today's devices to bring new levels of interactivity to art and music.

Michael will present specifically on the potential uses of accelerometers in
interactive art, musical instruments, and assistive technologies. The aim of
the talk will be to make these devices seem accessible and exciting to
anyone who might be interested in using these powerful though inexpensive
devices in their own explorations.

Michael Worobec is a software and firmware engineer by trade, and is
currently working on the Zune team at Microsoft. Michael has studied
electronic art at the University of New Mexico and Mathematics at Grinnell
College. Michael is very interested in sound as an abstract language, and is
particularly interested in how complex concepts can be transformed in
meaningful ways into audio.

Hugo Solis Garcia: Juum, a framework for multimedia production and
composition

Hugo Solís García (1976, México City) is currently a Ph.D student at DXARTS.
His main interests are sound art, musical structure of improvised music,
human computer musical interaction, and audiovisual systems. Currently he
works on the development of sonic and visual extensions for living and dead
pianos, the production of tools for collective creation, the creation of
interactive and multimedia installations, and also plays with the Juum duet.

On his talk, Hugo will talk about Juum, a framework for
multimedia production and composition that he has been developing during the
last year. This piece of software allows him to integrate all his
requirements into one single tool that follows his creative process. With
this program he has produced all his artistic works over the last year and
an interesting feedback loop has emerged. The tool has evolved because of
the artistic requirements and the art pieces have been influenced by the
program. This
constant iteration between technique and creativity constitute now a
layer in his artistic journey. The talk will be supported by previous works,
and samples of his work and research.

As ever, special thanks to 911 Media Arts Center for providing such a great
venue and friendly support for our monthly Dorkbot meetings.

See you on Wednesday, Jan 7th!
