I forwarded this thread to a friend who used to work there. Her response:
The answer to the question is- the lights are a representation of the amount
of calories you would burn, so when you pedal at a certain rate it activates
a corresponding amount of bulbs to light, the pedalling is NOT powering the
bulbs, though that would be cool. You can actually light-up a pretty big
light though if you use LEDs. They (PSC) have a stationary bike with a
generator for the Engineering van assembly. It can power a light and a toy
electric guitar.
