And very often the only problem is an overheated electrolytic filter capacitor in one of the two fluorescent backlight drivers. Also note that these drivers are monitored by the processor, which shuts everything down if just one lamp fails or one driver section croaks. You can stick a resistor across the dead lamp. Half-bright LCD display for free! I've replaced the lamps in these before. It's a big surgery job, with the greatest challenge being putting everything back together in the exact right order when done. (((((((((((((((((( ( ( ( ( (O) ) ) ) ) ))))))))))))))))))) William J. So, we're pushing it back to 9:30 over beers at the 91b Hammer in Georgetown. info below, if you want to join. ****** Holy Bajeesus it's our 15th Hive-mind Halloween Party on Sat Oct 31, and we're gearing up for scary, creepy, hive-mind halloween madness. If you like interactive fun, decorating, scaring people, or in any way expressing yourself creatively at parties for a good cause, join our crew! *What*: *Planning/brainstorming meeting* for Hive-Mind Halloween decorating and interactive fun *When:* *Weds, October 7, 9:30pm* *Where*: 91b Hammer: 6009 Airport Way S *Who: * Anyone who wants to play We'll hit the 91b Hammer for beers afterwards to continue with alcohol-lubricated brainstorming activities. *More about Hive-mind Halloween*: Each year, we throw a really great party, drawing 700-900 super-costumed people, and use the money raised to donate to non-profit cultural arts and education programs for youth (Youngstown, and Room to Read). We already have an amazing evening lined up with 10 great DJs in two dance floors, VJs, 2 bars, interactive projects, and more. BUT, it also needs to look great! This year, the theme is, go figure, "Halloween"! We're thinking oldstyle: graveyards, ghosts, monsters, hell -- but are game for whatever ideas people come up with. We've been doing this for a long time, so have a lot of resources you can leverage! *What the creative crew does: * Our primary goal is to descend upon the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center and transform it into a halloween-themed mega-party space through decorations and interactive projects. It's all about being creative, having a lot fun, all while helping out a great cause. Whether you'd just like to show up and help out, or take on a leadership role in manifesting your own creative ideas, we'd love you to join in on the fun. What's involved? Between now and Oct 31st we'll have a meeting or two, a work party or two, and then we'll decorate Fri and Sat before the party on Oct 30/31. And, if you need more incentive, you'll get in for free. *Your own group project?* If you have a group that'd like to do a collaborative project, even better! Speak fast because some spaces are already claimed. What we really need right now is a *chill space*. If you can't make this meeting, but want to participate, please email me so I can be sure to keep you in the loop. If you do a search for "kef speaker" or "mcintosh amp" there are a couple of hits, so you can see what other people are asking for comparable equipment. However, I agree that eBay is awkward in general :] Hope this helps, Paul ________________________________ From: Bryan Willman To: dorkbotsea-blabber at dorkbot.org Sent: Monday, October 5, 2009 8:42:47 AM Subject: [dorkbotsea-blabber] local place to sell high end stereo equipment? local place to sell high end stereo equipment? There's a "committee" but it's really just everyone who is interested in organising, and lately those of us who have been doing it have all been slammed by other projects. We're not paid to this, we don't have contracts, and the sad reality is that anything that's entirely a volunteer effort ends up falling by the wayside when all the volunteers' day jobs get in the way. Because of this we are not possessive about dorkbot. I think I speak for all the overlords when I say that we would love to get some new people involved so that meetings can keep happening. If anyone on this list is so inclined, please speak up - either email the list or contact the overlords directly at dorkbotsea at dorkbot.org . Down here we've found a very successful approach in that we have very frequent "informal" meetings that are just held at a local coffeeshop/pub every two weeks. This takes some of the pressure off of holding more formalized/structured events and helps the group keep a pretty good persistent state. We have some people who only come to the informal events, some that come to the structured events, and some that just participate via the mailing list or our IRC channel (quite a few out-of-towners on there, in fact). I'd encourage anyone who is feeling that they're not getting their fill of dorkbotsea to consider just doing something casual. Consider it dorkbotsea social hour, perhaps. Anyway, that's my $0.02+inflation. ~thomas dorkbotpdx founder, semi-overlord and instigator -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Currently there are about six active overlords - people are more or less involved as work and life vary. It involves: - ocassionally organizing some or all of a monthly mtg, which for traditional 3-speaker type mtgs means rounding up the speakers and communicating with them about mtg times, formats, etc. - mtg with other overlords every month or two to plan future mtgs. - misc: web site updates, rounding up projectors, finding mtg space, buying beer for mtgs, etc. - organizing special events, in particular our yearly art show, which is a ton of work. That said, there's no reason you would have to sign up for the whole deal. If you wanted to just sign up to do a single mtg that'd be fine. One of the harder things for me personally is keeping up with what's going on around town that would make interesting Dorkbot content, so even just a 'this guy would be great' email would be appreciated. Or if you have an idea for a special event, like the kit night we did a while back, esp if you want to organize it. Re the web site, we need to do some modernization as it's really clunky to update right now. That's a fairly big project on it's own, where volunteers would likely be useful. The thing I've loved about being an overlord is working closely with some really talented people in a volunteer setting. I think it'd be great to see more people involved. Glad to see a discussion on how the local dorkbot chapter operates. Dorkbot-Sea has done some really incredible stuff, maybe with a few snafus; but my belief is that it will continue to do so. The loss of the 911 meeting space is a bit of a hit, but solvable, there's a myriad of meeting halls in this town available on many evenings (TK Buildings performance space comes to mind). This thread reminded me of an interview with the founder of Dorkbot, Douglas Irving Repetto, which is in the 32nd print version of Neural: http://www.neural.it/art/2009/04/post_3.phtml He speaks mostly about his own work there, but a discussion about Dorkbot, and other similar groups, is also included. A quote: "I think that lots of people have been attracted to Dorkbot because it's very purposefully inclusive and non-judgmental, failure-friendly, and a bit silly. People have enough pressure in their lives! It's worked well internationally because we haven't tried to define what it is, so there's space for each city to reinvent it. It's sort of a natural experiment -- what happens if you just have a name and motto ("people doing strange things with electricity") and let people do whatever they want with it? I personally find his perspective inspirational. My 1.7 cents (minus inflation ;) ) Cheers, -Joe On Oct 21, 2009, at 2:02 PM, Eric McNeill wrote: > I thought I'd expound on this a bit. Subtext has recently ceased operations, or at least suspended them indefinitely. This means that the first Wednesday of every month is now available, and we would be glad to share that slot with Dorkbot if you are wanting a consistent venue to call home. While I realize that Dorkbot is not exclusively about music, I feel there is sufficient overlap to justify it being part of our series if that is interesting to you folks. We have a good PA system (capable of 6.1), a big white wall behind the stage that makes a great projection screen, decent basic theatrical lighting, and a bunch of stacking chairs and folding tables. And did I mention the ugly faux-wood lectern? We've got one. Our usual deal with presenters on our series is to take 20% of the total door only if the door is $200 or more. If the door is less than $200, we do not charge anything for the space. However, that is flexible and open to discussion, given that I don't think you charge admission. Also, if the monthly schedule is too frequent for your busy Overlords to maintain, you could do it every other month. Or quarterly. Whatever. There are only a few things that might not work for you, so I will put them up front right now: a) you can't serve alcohol here b) you have to be completely cleaned up and out of the building by 11 PM c) you can't make noise in here before 5 PM I have not attended a Dorkbot meeting in a few years, so I don't know how late it goes or if it involves drunken revelry. I'm just sayin', those are house rules that can't be bent. If this sounds interesting, I will be happy to hear from the Overlords off list. There will be a November dorkbot-sea meeting on Wednesday the 4th (probably at Waid's, but that's tbc). We'll do a "meet the overlords" session immediately before or after, and give you a more useful amount of warning this time. If you can't make it to that, then we can work something else out over email. Meanwhile, we have some things in motion for December and January meetings, so this show is getting back on the road. There is definitely still a lot of scope for additional people to get involved, and doing so would make the thing more stable in the long term. Message-ID: Greetings from DorkbotLV in Las Vegas. A friend of mine is moving up to Seattle so I figured I would poke at the Seattle Dorkbot list to see what's going on there. For the web site, I pretty much copied what DorkbotPDX is doing, with Drupal setup more or less like a blog/wiki that anyone can contribute to. http://dorkbotlv.org http://dorkbotpdx.org I think the design works out pretty well, and wasn't too terribly difficult to setup. If there is interest, feel free to ping me, and I can give some pointers on what I did to setup the dorkbotlv.org site and try to answer whatever questions you might have. perl -e 's++=END;++y(;-P)}\n?k++=;<+xru}?print:??;' ---- Eric McNeill eric.mcneill at gmail.com Wed Oct 21 17:02:29 EDT 2009 I thought I'd expound on this a bit. I realize there are a lot of parties happening on Sarurday but it would mean a lot to me and everyone else who's been busting their ass to get this place ready if you'd come start out your evening at the Living Room before you go off galavanting into the night. We're at 1355 East Olive Way between Bellevue and Melrose, near the I5 off ramp. We'll be open from 8pm to 2am with DJ Riz headlining, along with DJ Lady Schick and DJ De Vo. Please join us for a very special opening for a very special place. Thanks and apologies ahead of time for the shameless plug.
