Subscriptions are open from January 1st to March 10th, 2009. Submissions are free and open to professionals, researchers and students of the electronic language. In the last nine years, FILE has shown what's been happening in the global networks related to digital and electronic arts, becoming a reference for studies and research on new media. It has exhibited web art, net art, artificial life, hypertext, computer animation, real time teleconference, virtual reality, soft art, games, interactive movies, e-videos, digital panoramas and electronic art installations and robotics, through interactive and immersive rooms. FILE SYMPOSIUM has become a meeting point in the city of Sao Paulo, proposing discussions and tackling the electronic-digital culture in its relations to art, science and technologies. FILE HIPERSONICA, the festival's sonorous branch, is on it's 7th edition and intends to elaborate connections between the world of images, the world of sonorities and the world of texts. Sound installations and real time performances will be presented by a number of groups and collectives, comprising both erudite and pop electronic music, but also electronic compositions, sound poetry, radio art, video music and sonic landscapes, as well as Djs and VJs presenting their sets through specific apparatus and installations with experimental and immersive projections. On view through March 28, 2009, the exhibition features work by 11 artists whose work responds to the new interactive DVD novel The Imaginary 20th Century by Norman Klein, Margo Bistis and Andreas Kratky. The exhibition is sponsored by OTIS Ben Maltz Gallery and Public Programs, The Center for Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts, and The David Bermant Foundation. Exhibition related programming includes a conversation with Tom Leeser, Norman Klein and Margo Bistis on Sunday, February 8 at 4pm, and an exhibition tour led by the curators Tom Leeser and Meg Linton on Saturday, March 28, 11am. Exhibition Curators Tom Leeser, Director of the Center for Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts, and Meg Linton, Director of OTIS Ben Maltz Gallery and Public Programs, worked in collaboration with author Norman Klein and historian Margo Bistis to create this dynamic, kinetic and provocative interpretation of man's need to envision the future. The curators and artists are engaging with the novel by assembling work in response to Klein's interest in what he calls the "misremembering of the future." Featured artists previewed the DVD novel, and responded by creating a new work or submitting an existing work that engages the premise. We are developing software and devices to create and explore these narrratives through a vehicle-based virtual periscope, a gallery-based installation, and mobile phone and web applications. http://datascape.info/ We would like interested parties to work with us to test and explore the opportunities afforded by this system. Participants will benefit from the program by having a new "vehicle" through which to explore their given line of research or expression. Experiences from this program will help to guide the continued development and direction of Datascape, and it's contribution to related fields of inquiry. We are primarily interested in ideas whose geographic area of interest is in Los Angeles and Orange counties of California. Proposals should also consider the local and immersive nature of the virtual world experience as contrasted with a typical top-down cartographic mapping approach. We are casting a broad net in terms of the types of projects, some potential uses of the platform include: - A platform through which to visualize, explore and/or communicate existing research projects with a geographic component. - Issue-based interventions into dominant understanding of communities or spaces. - Interactive aesthetic re-imaginings of existing communities or pathways. - Interactive sound and music experiences generated by locations, geographic data, or travel trajectories. - Annotation of geographic space with informational or media overlays. - Interactive place-based stories. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please email a *brief* expression of interest outlining the issue, data, story or experience you would like to convey. We're interested in ideas ranging from the concept phase to research that is more fully flushed out. Send to Eric Kabisch . We hope to discuss your ideas and begin working with participants as soon as possible, but are also interested in ideas that might have a longer time horizon. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This year we are also inviting artists to create and collaborate on works that explore the theme "Emergent Communication." Artists are encouraged (but not required) to work in groups to build pieces that communicate with each other (and potentially the viewers and environment) in novel ways, to create a larger system that's greater and more complex than its individual parts.
