[jmsl] jmsl and max msp

I apologize for the newbie question (I really don't have much idea on java):
I'm trying to use max-msp in order to generate scores that go beyond the classical midi limitations. JMSL was the only package I found to somehow write musicxml files from max msp to be exported then to other notation programs like sibelius or finale.
The question is: how is it possible to extend the funcionality of the jmsl.maxnotate application? is it absolutely necessary to go into the source? I'm really excited with this potential capacity of max msp through jmsl, but it's a pity that for now the jms.maxnotate only implements the same issues as a normal midi recorder, it would be really nice to amke possible the other implicit musicshapes (noteheads, articulations, etc.) that the core of jmsl has.
  Thank you for your help,

Alberto
