The following is a paraphrase of what someone told me:


The Italian company is (was?) called Bontemp-Farfisa and had a waveguide
synth one year before the VL1.  The gossip I heard is that the technique was
invented first in Rome and an american
student who was in a conference there saw it and the rest is history.


Salacious gossip probably, except that any company (i.e. Yamaha) who don't
put any contact info on their UK web site (the last time I looked)
whatsoever always seem to be hiding something.
