A number of people are finding that SAOL/SASL, the Structured Audio portion
of
MPEG-4 works really well for them. There is a version called 'sfront' which
is particularly efficient form of SAOL (pronounced 'sail'). You can find more
information at http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~lazzaro/sa/.

Csound now has a large volume of examples and support documents, of which
the Csound Book
is the most impressive collection to date.

But to answer your question, besides Csound, there is also SAOL. SAOL has a
discussion list too.
