[music-dsp] Windows Multimedia or DirectSound?

Bye to everyone.

Which technology has the lowest sampling latency-times between Windows
Multimedia (waveIn*) and DirectSound? I suppose one of these is built on top
of the other, so one should be slower than the other. After all, which
technology would be better to develop a real-time audio processing system?
Which is an acceptable processing latency-time for a software system of this
type?

Another question: when I use my sound card (a SB-AWE64) in full duplex mode
(sampling and playing-back simultaneously) I hear a lot of backgroud (white)
noise. Is this a problem concerning the sound card or something else (Is it
possible to mount and handle two sound cards in the same system)?

Thanx.argv
