It's not popular with me!  My Akai sampler thinks that middle C (MIDI 
note 60) is C3, and my Yamaha and Korg synths agree with it, so I was
suprised to find Sound Forge calls it C4. I assume it's a US thing.

So please - anyone writing samplers or sample editors, make this a
user option. 

And of course, pianists might think each octave starts at A not C...
