Hallo!
For a class on signal analysis here at the university, we want to
program a detection system with matlab that deals with noise and
transients/attacks (or even "percussiveness") in musical signals; as far
as i know this goes under the name of "distinctive feature detection"
(though i only found this term in phonology...). we are looking for
hints where to start / what literature to consult / what concepts could
be useful. We'll try to describe an arbitrary input signal in terms of
their noise "character" (i.e. probably the kind of energy distribution
over freq. and time space; maybe one should start with the
autocorrelation? or perform a sinusoidal resynthesis and calculate the
residual?) and the kind of attacks it shows (perhaps more difficult...;
finding them was discussed frequently here; ideas includes STFT frame
comparision and measuring the zero-passings in the timedomain signal per
time frame to find the attacks). I know more sophisticated concepts deal
with neural networks but that'd be too much work for us, I suppose...
Thanks for advice + hints!
Ciao,
Hanns Holger
