The old Commodore Pet (quasi-ancestor of the Commodore 64) had a
halt-and-catch-fire instruction.
The problem wasn't in the 6502 though.
IIRC, the memory locations for controlling the scan rate of the integrated
video monitor were in RAM rather than ROM or other non-volatile hardware. If
a program bug accidentally over-wrote the values of the video control
addresses, it would burn out the monitor and ruin the machine quite nicely,
make lots of smoke (G).
