[music-dsp] Pitch and time-shifting

I was asked by a phonetician to recommend commercial
pitch-shifting/time-stretching software for her research. I was somewhat
underwhelmed by the naturalness of the VST/MAS demo's I listened to. Not to
offend the designers of these systems (resource/quality trade-offs might
apply), but I'd thought the problem was more or less solved (?). At least,
my discussions with researchers had led me to think so.
Steinberg's VoiceMachine, apparently based on IVL algorithms, is
phase-shifty and artificial-sounding. The Arboretum Harmony plug, ditto. Are
there better commercial options? It sounds to my ear that we've gone from
rodent-sounds to robot-sounds.
Thoughts appreciated...
