Yes, it should, just don't plug in the Boom box. Some sort of bass
level control should be available on most setups ?
I think some of the bass will still go through your normal front left
and right speakers, but your seat won't vibrate ;)

Get some more soft furniture, man ! (hey, some beanbags and big thick
rugs everywhere, big pouffe's and wall hangings and ten fat cats) 
This is none too technical though...

Stuff your speakers full of cotton (no, don't)
