Indeed, in other cases, the mere statement of the problem may be 
sufficient to keep a rather lot of mathematicians gainfully employed 
for 99 years!  A propos, there appears to be a solution (

conjecture ( circa 1904;

this: "Suppose M is a smooth compact 3-dimensional manifold.  if every 
simple closed curve within M can be deformed continuously to a point, 
does it follow that M can be deformed into a 3-sphere?"  (answer: yes.  
ok, nobody cares about this, but what the hay..)
