This points strongly to the presence of the "denormal" problem (numbers
too small for the floating-point representation), which is native to P4
CPUs, but not (IIRC) to P3s or Athlons. As a quick check, try adding
very low-level noise (e.g. amp = 1.0e-20) to the input signal. There is
detailed information about this in the musicdsp source archive.
