Roland used this type of synthesis in many products, such as the D series
(10,110,20,50). I think Korg used it too and called it Ai2 (or was it A2i?).
It came in reaction to the bunch of FM synths that were available then, and
after people heard the Fairlight sounds.... Sampling was seen as a
definitive solution, but in the late 80's some manufacturers ended up using
small PCM sounds, because memory wasn't as cheap as it is today.
I don't know how it would sound using state-of-the-art samples, but my D20
is far from outputing credible instruments (perhaps due to the low Fs and
bit depth they used)... However I still use it for typical eighties tunes,
and it fits perfectly :)
