You have encountered "Denormal floats". They make it really slow...
Have a look for "Denormal" at http://musicdsp.org/archive.php?classid=5#51
for a solution.

Subject: [music-dsp] Intel FPU slowdown at IIR tales - as data goes
Hello All !!!
I just encountered totally unexpected prolbem: I'm working on some
VST-plugin. If data become zero after it has some non-zero samples and
data circulatibng in IIR's decrements to values of order 1.E-320 and
so on then FPU speed goes lower aproximatedly 15 times! FCLDW=0x027F -
so FPU can't be slowed by exceptions. But it slowed! WHY???
