Paul,

I have found this one, called as

http://www.freebyte.com/programming/assembler/

it is a macro cross-assembler that seems to be able to assemble code for 
many  processors. You have to compile it yourself, and I have not tried 
it.

Motorola really ought to release their assembler as open source, it would 
really benefit them.
