Hmm. I think that at lower frequencies the brain use phase differences betwen left and right ear (as long as the wavelength is small enough compared to the 30cm or so path difference between ears). 

While at higher frequencies, the HRTF implies that sounds coming from different angles will be filtered differently, and that a sound coming directly from the right will be quite a bit louder and contain more hf in the right ear than in the left.

Moreover, I think that we have a "hole" somewhere between 1-2 kHz where none of the mentioned mechanisms are particularly efficient. As well as for low frequencies, of course.
