Not a Mac user, and the documentation is really scarce, but the features
and support they rave about seem to suggest that Core Audio files are
simply a new QuickTime derivative. I mean, QTFF's 64-bit, it has AAC and
the like, it can seamlessly reference both raw and compressed data in
external files, and the software support exists in QT as advertised.
Apple also seems to be leveraging QTFF quite heavily now that ISO and
MPEG have adopted most of it in their Base Media File Format. So I'm
guessing CAFF is audio tracks only QTFF with a couple of new boxes for
configuration information. If so, adding support for it will be a bit
tricky from the format viewpoint (QT is deeply nested/structured while
most of the necessary encodings are already supported by libsndfile),
but then the code could be used for BMFF/MPEG-7 support as well.

Then again, this is just a guess...
