Funny I always interpreted those texts as viewing samples as points along a
continuous (hopefully bandlimited) signal.
And sinc function interoplation makes it easy to interpolate and reconstruct
the whole signal if you happen to have sampled instances along a
bandlimited continuous signal so there's no reason NOT to think of samples
in that way.
