Julius, what do you mean by "isolate coefficient variation from filter state"?

i think i know what a normalized ladder form is, i think i know how k1 and k2 are derived from and are dependent on the biquad poles, and i know that the magnitudes of the states are limited in an L^2 norm kinda way.  but wouldn't sweeping the k1 and k2 values possibly introduce artifacts in the normalized ladder?

i'm sure i'm missing something.
