Ok, so having run my wait-a-while-and-hope-it-just-gets-fixed() function 
long enough ...

1.  Do we have overloading now for Perl?  Any pointers to what this 
entails?  I think it's absolutely necessary.

2.  Also, I may be too late, but my gut had two responses to "naming"all 
the normtable, inverttable, shifttable, etc ... calls, how about:

    handle = modtable(table, "norm", ...)
    handle = modtable(table, "invertn", ...)

and stuff like that?
