A study of the life and works of Ludwig van Beethoven, with emphasis on selected symphonies, string quartets, and piano sonatas. Also considers the changing nature of the critical reception of Beethoven and issues of Classicism and Romanticism in music.

The prerequisite for this course is C1123 or F1123 Masterpieces of Western Music or BC 1001x or 1002y Introduction to Music, or equivalent.
