Strategies of music making among all Americans, regardless of racial and ethnic backgrounds, have pursued different historical, geographical, and cultural trajectories. Music has played an important role in shaping, maintaining, protecting, and altering these identities, and this course examines issues of race and ethnicity in music, focussing on New York City.

The prerequisite for this course is C1123 or F1123 Masterpieces of Western Music or BC 1001x or 1002y Introduction to Music, or equivalent.
