A study of issues in Enlightenment philosophy and aesthetics as they pertain to 18th-century musical controversies and repertoires. Topics include imitation and expression, moral characters, intelligibility, sensibility and Sturm und Drang, opera (Rousseau, Gluck, Mozart), symphony, and Haydn's Creation.
The prerequisite for this course is C1123 or F1123 Masterpieces of Western Music or BC 1001x or 1002y Introduction to Music, or equivalent.
