View The Complete Listing of Dissertations

December, 2007:
Please note that this directory is incomplete and is currently being updated with recent dissertations and older dissertations not yet listed.
This directory reports dissertations presented intra muros in Musicology to the Department of Music of Columbia University in New York City, and successfully defended. Its coverage extends back to the Award of Degrees on October 22, 1986.
Between 1986 and 1990, the Department of Music offered three separate PhD programs, in Ethnomusicology, Historical Musicology, and Music Theory. In addition, candidates were permitted while pursuing one of the these three programs to take a "specialization" in another, thus effectively working in an interdisciplinary field. From 1990, these provisions were replaced with a single PhD program in Musicology. Within that program, however, the three original areas of study have continued to be recognized informally.
The Department has a second program, leading to the degree of DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in Music Composition. Recently defended dissertations for this degree are not included in this directory at this time. They will be added soon.
