Like the Descent of their Last End for full orchestra was written in New York, 1990-91. The piece uses two motives as figures. One represents man's desire for the ideal, and the other, nature. A slowly ascending arpeggio (the motif of man's desire) is persistently repeated to attain the goal, but always falls short. After a silence, it is answered only by the motif of nature. This narrative implied by the relationship of the two motives is the theme of the piece. At the end, the ascending arpeggio is transfigured into continuously descending arpeggios. The title, which is inspired by the last sentence of 'The Dead' in Joyce's Dubliners, suggests this transfiguration. The analytic paper deals with my compositional process chiefly in terms of motives and pitch organization. It also discusses the overall structure, which is influenced by the narrative implications of the two motives. Each motif is constructed with its own pitch material and forms the basis for a section. And all the sections are ordered to express the narrative. These sections based on different pitch materials are implicitly connected by a tonic-dominant relation in an Eb pitch center. The first chapter explains the narrative and the overall form in general. The second chapter discusses the basic pitch material. Then the third chapter analyzes each section in detail. The conclusion summarizes the relationship of the narrative structure and the pitch organization.
