Duo is a single-movement composition scored for Clarinet in B-flat, Contrabass and electronic sounds; it has a duration of twelve minutes. The work is dedicated to clarinetist Allen Blustine and bassist Donald Palma. The score is not in 'c'; the clarinet is written in b-flat and the contrabass sounds an octave lower than written. In the preface to the score are performance notes; once the tape enters, it runs continually and determines all designated changes of tempo. A tape machine, amplifier and loudspeakers are required for playback. Placement of the speakers and the distribution of the stereo channels of the tape are explained in the preface to the score. The accompanying essay contains historical and analytical commentary on Duo. Information is provided about the electronic components of the work: the composer's background in electronic music; how the tape and instruments are integrated; a list of equipment and how it was used to create the sounds. The analysis is concerned with form. The four Structural Divisions, the main climaxes, the theme, motifs, and trichords are all related to the discussion of form. The final chapter deals exclusively with pitch: how it functions note-by-note and how it relates to the overall harmonic configuration of the work. Examples from the score are included to clarify the written analysis.
