Students with advanced standing normally begin working at the M.Phil. level (but see remarks regarding Advanced Standing).

For the M.A.

18 points, partially specified
one language examination
one paper (Historical Musicology and Theory), or one thesis (Ethnomusicology)

For the M.Phil.

at least 24 additional points, approved by advisor
general examination in three parts
one additional language examination

For the Ph.D.

preparation and successful defense of a dissertation proposal
successful defense of the doctoral dissertation
