FIRST YEAR
Courses:
1. Two proseminars: that of your own area, plus one other, 6points total
Proseminar in Ethnomusicology
Proseminar in Historical Musicology
Proseminar in Music Theory2. Any graduate course in analysis (HM and Theory); Field Methods I (Ethno), 3 points
3. Any three graduate courses approved by the advisor, 9 points
For Ethno, two of the three courses must be in the Department of Anthropology, in Cultural Anthropology.
Students should elect courses that will help prepare them for the particular portions of the general examinations they expect to take.Examinations:
1. First Language Examination--normally German-- taken in early September, January, or early May
Submissions:
Ethno: begin work on M.A. Thesis during Spring semester
Theory: choose topic and advisor for M.A. Paper during Spring semesterReviews:
January, May
Students not making satisfactory academic progress are warned that they may be asked to leave the program after receiving the M.A. Degree
SECOND YEAR
Courses:
At least 12 points (6+6, 9+3, or 3+9) of courses chosen in close consultation with the adviser. Courses will be chosen from graduate music courses and/or graduate courses in related fields.G6000: Professional Strategies and Skills (this seminar does not count toward the credit totals for the MA, MPhil, DMA, or PhD).
Submissions:
HM: M.A. Essay (September 30)
Ethno: M.A. Thesis (December, last day of classes)
Theory: M.A. Paper (December, last day of classes)Degree award:
All M.A. requirements completed by December; M.A. awarded in February or May
Examinations:
1. Second Language Examination (if not passed earlier), in a language appropriate to the proposed field of specialization in early September, January, or early May
2. HM, Theory: General Examination Parts 1 & 2 (early May)
Reviews:
January, May
Upon completion of the M.A. requirements (or sooner), students will be informed whether or not they will be invited to continue in the M.Phil. program
THIRD YEAR
Courses:
At least 12 points (6+6, 3+9, 9+3) of courses chosen in close consultation with the adviseraEU"courses will be chosen from graduate music courses and/or graduate courses in related fields.
For HM and Theory, one of these will normally be the Dissertation Seminar (3 points)Examinations:
1. General Examinations
HM: Part 3, end of August
Theory: Part 3, January
Ethno: Parts 1 & 2, early May2. Third language examination, if dissertation research requires this third language.
Degree award:
All M.Phil. requirements completed by May 1
M.Phil. Degree awarded (May or October)Reviews:

FOURTH YEAR
Courses:
Students are encouraged to take additional courses beyond the M.A. and M.Phil. requirements.
Submissions:
Dissertation proposal submitted to area committee by midterm date of Fall semester
Examinations:
1. General Examination
Ethno: Part 3, September
2. Proposal Defense (Fall); candidacy for the Ph.D.; work on dissertation
Reviews:
January, MayStudents will be informed whether they may proceed to dissertation ("doctoral candidacy"), or must leave after the M.Phil. Degree.
FIFTH YEAR
Continuation of work on Ph.D. dissertation
SIXTH YEAR
Completion of Ph.D. dissertation
Doctoral Defense
Ph.D. awarded (February or May).
