dorkbot started in New York City in 2000 as a place for people doing strange things
with electricity to get together and talk about their work. Since then similar meetings have
sprung up around the world!

I started the music-dsp mailing list (focusing on musical digital signal processing)
in 1996 as a graduate student at CalArts. It's been active for several years now,
and has thousands of subscribers from around the world.
