For Rosa is a short work for solo piano commissioned by and written for composer/pianist Jed Distler. As I wrote the music, I also attempted to think of a title that would reflect the work's intimate nature but also carry some kind of extra-musical weight. Finally, when the work was nearly finished, I happened to remember an event that I had seen by chance on television a few months earlier: a CSPAN broadcast of American Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks being honored by the President of the United States. While watching the broadcast, I had been impressed by the pride and energy that exuded from Ms. Park's face, despite the fact that she was obviously quite frail physically. With this is mind, I named this work For Rosa, intending it as a small gift to commemorate such a courageous person. Jed Distler, piano.
