From the Blowing Steam concert program notes: "Inbetween Commissioned in 2002 by the Tel-Aviv Museum of Art for the Reflex Ensemble. Four double duo of cello and violin, and double bass and cello. Performed using two independent earphone clicktracks, creating the sense of a very much synchronized far-from-perfect dialogue."
Inbetween was performed in the Chelsea Art Museum as part of the Reflex Ensemble concert. In the gallery space each of the four musicians was placed in a corner of a rectangular area of about 80 x 40 square feet, while the audience was invited to move freely inside the area defined by the performers.
Composer Keren Rosenbaum approached me with the task to create a live-video construct extending the philosophy of the piece -- a discordant double dialogue, while at the same time creating a connecting focal point for the participants. To that end Jared Lamenzo and myself decided to use four live-video feeds from miniature surveillance cameras placed at the feet of each performer and create a custom live video processing instrument, with which to mix and transform each of the feeds in response to the overheard double-dialogue. The result was projected in the center of the space, on the ceiling above the audience. We chose to work primarily with the color red, since it was the color of the jumpsuits that all ensemble members were wearing and it also lent itself well to the overall feel of the concert and the gallery space.
