| Crickets – This is a three-movement work for solo viola that was commissioned in 1993 by a colleague of mine while we were students at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. That colleague, Riichi Uemura, is currently a member of the Foné String Quartet, which is based in Florence, Italy. Below are mp3 files of all three movements. This site also contains the score for this work. The recording comes from a solo viola recital that Riichi gave in Tokyo on October 10th, 1996. As I worked on this composition during the summer of 1993, I could hear all of the night insects singing around my home. I knew that giving a cricket as a gift was a sign of friendship in some Asian cultures. I thought that it was awfully nice that Riichi had asked me to write a solo viola piece for him, and I decided to use this composition and the idea of crickets as a symbol of our friendship. I was fortunate that Riichi truly enjoyed performing this work, and he has played it often since then on his solo recitals.
