| Enter, Activity – This was my first foray into interactive music and was written for a performance at the Kitchen during the Computer Music Center’s Interactive Music Festival in the 2000. An improvisatory piece loosely based on a fragment of music by Thelonious Monk, I wanted to create a truly interactive work. I was very concerned with the meaning of “interactive” music, since by nature all live music is interactive at some level. As I thought about the nature of interactive music as I was composing this work for our Interactive Festival I decided that I needed to create a work in which I abdicated a certain degree of control – giving the overall control of the composition to my colleagues who processed my live electric guitar playing. My partners on this performance are Doug Geers on analog effects processors, Brad Garton using his real time Cmix instruments, and Luke DuBois who processed the guitar using MAX/MSP. Initially the guitar simply serves as an impulse generator that is processed by my friends, but not heard at all on it’s own. At some point, I turn up my guitar amp and begin to play along with the processed version of my previous gestures. The overall affect is a subtle, meditative performance that is probably closer to a contemporary version of Debussy than to the music of Monk. Below is a quicktime movie of the performance from the Kitchen concert.
