The interaction course started in February, 2001. Please see the course description for more details at http://music.columbia.edu/cmc/courses/mov-sound/.
In a large weekly Monday class we were introduced to a variety of interactive media for movement sound collaborations. This class was divided into groups. In ours, the Tuesday Group, we introduced ourselves to each other by showing some work and talking about what interested us. In the beginning a lot of time was spent listening to each others' ideas and nothing really happened.
One Saturday evening Keith and I met and we made a rough sketch of a piece that included all of the ideas that were presented so far. This piece would take 40- 50 minutes to perform. I presented this idea to the rest of the group and we started focusing our energy and ideas much more efficiently. We made a shorter version of the project in May with every idea still presented.
On Wednesdays in the dance composition class at Barnard College, led by Janet Soares, I showed my choreography and got helpful feedback on how to move forward with the choreographic process. The challenges were unique as they evolved slowly OverTime in the collaborative process. I very much enjoyed working with everybody in the group and still do. I would like to thank The Cunningham Dance Studio for this opportunity.
The following is a description of how the violin duo and the diem suit solo were created and examples as to how they can be developed for a future project. After having seen Maja (Violin) and Liz (Dance) improvise in a rehearsal I went into the studio alone and created a movement phrase inspired by the way Maja holds her violin. I taught the phrase to both Maja and Liz and created a floor and a jumping variation with and for Liz. Maja and I developed a movement solo for her. Keith made the music for Maja after her movements were made. I like the idea of having an acoustic sequence in the performance and can envision the idea being developed into other duets and trios.
The diem suit solo was created with an image of a blind, deaf, handicapped creature moving profoundly through space. My studies at the Cunningham Studio were an inspiration for the movements. I see the solo extended another 2 or 3 minutes in the future.
