The Department of Music notes with sadness the passing, at the age of 96, of the eminent Chinese-American composer Chou Wen-chung (1923-2019). He served on the Columbia faculty from 1964 to 1991.
Brad Lubman, distinguished conductor and composer, is the recipient of the 2019 Ditson Conductor’s Award for the advancement of American music.
"Illuminations: Essays in Honor of Brian Cherney" is a guest-edited volume by Robin Elliott, dedicated to the music of the Canadian composer Brian Cherney. It features writing by several Columbia affiliates including Core Lecturers Matthew Ricketts and Taylor Brook, CMC Instructor David Adamcyk, and Assistant Professor Zosha Di Castri.
The Department of Music warmly congratulates Dr. Mario Diaz de Leon (DMA, Composition 2013), who was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Music and Technology at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
We are deeply saddened that our alumnus Paul Nauert (GSAS ’97) passed away on Friday, July 26. Paul received his doctorate in music theory in 1997 under Jonathan Kramer's sponsorship. He was an accomplished composer, pianist, and computer programmer as well as music theorist.

Columbia Composition DMA student Stylianos Dimou's piece "my grounding | surrounding [it]_self / h_I. v.2" (2015-2016) for one percussionist and electronics has been awarded First Prize at the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione “Amici della Musica di Cagliari” 2016. The piece will be performed in Cagliari on the 28th of September.
