The Department warmly congratulates Dr. Ralph Whyte, who successfully defended his PhD dissertation in Historical Musicology titled “‘A Light in Sound, a Sound-like Power in Light: Light and/as Music in the History of the Color Organ” on May 3rd, 2019.
Paula Clare Harper, recent PhD alumna in Historical Musicology, will begin an assignment as a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of Music at Washington University in St. Louis in Fall 2019.

The award, given annually to an outstanding professor from Columbia College and from Columbia Engineering, is granted based on the ability to stimulate, challenge and inspire students; a demonstrated interest in students and the ability to relate positively to students outside the classroom; and a recognized high standing in one’s academic discipline.
Professor Giuseppe Gerbino has been awarded two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Humanities Center for his book project “Music and Mind in the Renaissance.”
Toru Momii received the Japanese American Association-Honjo Foundation Scholarship, which will be officially presented at the Harvard Club in May 2019.
Historical Musicology graduate student Velia Ivanova received the Margery Lowens Dissertation Research Fellowship at the annual meeting of the Society for American Music in New Orleans, LA.
The Department of Music has received a generous donation from Nina Sanders and Peter Sanders, daughter and son of the late Professor Emeritus, Ernest H. Sanders, who passed away at the age of 99 in early 2018. This donation was a bequest from Sanders.

The Serwer Fund assists currently registered graduate students in Historical Musicology, Theory, and Ethnomusicology in the pursuit of their scholarly work, including dissertation-related research, travel to conferences, and other initiatives.
The Department of Music is pleased to formally announce a study group in historical music notation, Ars Nota, which meets weekly on Columbia’s campus to sing medieval and Renaissance music from facsimiles of original sources.
For the Daughters of Harlem: Working in Sound has won an Action Grant from Humanities New York and a Public Outreach Grant from Columbia University’s Center for Science and Society to host a campus workshop in October 2018 for young women of color from New York’s public high schools.

Rebecca Kim edits the first comprehensive survey of the groundbreaking work of Earle Brown, augmented with several newly published items from his personal archive. Earle Brown (1926–2002) was a crucial part of a group of experimental composers known as the New York School, and his music intersects in fascinating ways with that of his colleagues John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Christian Wolff.
Our colleague George Lewis was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Harvard in this year's Commencement.
William Mason has accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Music at Wheaton College in Norton Massachusetts.
