Originally performed at the Park Theatre in New York on April 20, 1830, L’Ape Musicale is Da Ponte’s final libretto and the first Italian opera conceived and staged in the United States.
On October 15 and 17, the Cagliari Opera House, one of Italy’s most renowned opera companies, will present the first modern rendering of the opera in the Rotunda of Columbia University’s Low Memorial Library, at 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public. The production is part of the Internationalization Project of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari promoted by the Region of Sardinia and included in the program of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, supported by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. Da Ponte, author of Mozart’s most important opera librettos, was the first Professor of Italian at Columbia.
