Historical Musicology graduate student Callum Blackmore has been awarded the M. Elizabeth C. Bartlet Fund for Research in France from the American Musicological Society. This fund will support research for his dissertation, “Opera at the Dawn of Capitalism: Staging Economic Change in France and Its Colonies from Rameau to Cherubini,” at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and Archives nationales d’outre-mer in Aix-en-Provence. Callum will be consulting manuscripts relating to opera houses in eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue, examining the ways in which the slavery-based colonial economy inflected the culture of celebrity at these theaters.
