Tyshawn Sorey. Sharif Hamza for the New York Times
Dr. Tyshawn Sorey (DMA 2017) has been honored with a longform profile of his life and work in the New York Times Magazine this week by contributor Adam Shatz. This profile comes on the heels of an earlier profile in the week by New York Times classical music editor Zachary Woolfe. Through weekly Zoom meetings that began at the start of the pandemic in March, Shatz creates an effective and engaging portrait of an artist carving out a space to make the music that he wants to make. His professors George Lewis and Fred Lerdahl make cameos in their places as guiding instructors. It's an intimate piece, and Dr. Sorey is fully represented on the page. Even so, the profile celebrates the vast amount of art he still has yet to create. If you would like to read the work, click here.
Congratulations Tyshawn!
